Celebrate Earth Hour at Tygum Lagoon

Published: 15 Mar 2016

A free community event at Tygum Lagoon this Saturday will put the spotlight on global warming.

The event is one of thousands happening across the globe to recognise Earth Hour, an international energy saving gesture that will see people switch off lights between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday 19 March.

City of Logan Mayor Pam Parker said the Tygum Lagoon Earth Hour celebration had grown to become a popular community event.

“Earth Hour is about encouraging people to take simple actions locally to affect change globally,” Cr Parker said.

Mayor Parker said the Tygum Lagoon event offered plenty of fun workshops and activities designed to involve the whole family.

“One of the most popular activities is the lantern making workshop,” she said.

“The whole family can get involved and once the sun goes down, the lanterns are towed out into the middle of the lagoon by one of the model ships provided by Logan City Marine Modellers.

“It lights up the lagoon beautifully and is a real spectacle so I encourage everyone to come down this Saturday night and get involved.”

Due to the limited number of places available for the lantern making workshop, people must RSVP by calling Council on 3412 4491 or emailing environment@logan.qld.gov.au

No RSVP is required for any other activities.

To link with this year’s Earth Hour sub-theme ‘Places We Love’, the Logan Art Gallery will run an interactive children’s art activity that will act as a reminder of the many amazing natural places in the City of Logan that may be impacted on by a changing climate.

The Earth Hour event runs from 5pm to 8.30pm and will also feature:

* Acoustic live music from Dave Power
* An evening sail of model boats on the lagoon (courtesy of the Logan City Marine Modellers)
* Telescope viewing (courtesy of the Scenic Rim Astronomy Association)
